1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III Record Auction Price $1 Million
By Dave Ashton
Our Australian brethren are known for their classic muscle cars and now it seems the asking price for one of their classics rides is now matching their American equivalents. A 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III was sold at auction this past weekend for a record $1,030,000 which was once owned by Australian cricketer Jeff Thomson.
The Falcon was sold at Lloyds Auctions, Bathurst beating the previous record for a 1971 GTHO Phase III set in June 2007 which sold for $750,000. Jeff Thomson himself paid $23,000 for the car in the late 1980s, still a bit of an increase from its original sale price of $5000 ($53,578 in today’s money), but I bet he’s smiling now deciding to keep the car all these years.
Originally stated as the worlds fastest four-door production car, the Falcon is home to a 351ci Cleveland V8, producing around 300hp and based on the Ford Falcon XY with only 300 originally made and only 100 still in existence. As the car has now set a new record at auction, its expected more Phase III’s will come up for sale as owners now know the new worth of the vehicle.
