Hagerty Price Reports: Your Muscle Car’s Real Worth

Online price indicators can sometimes be a little hit and miss. Anything that involves an automated service, will at best give you generic figures, but this really depends on the tool you are using.
So we thought we would just try out the Hagerty ‘Price guide report’ to see how accurate it is with predicting the prices of classic muscle cars currently and over time.

Firstly, we chose a popular car from eBay.com with ‘the buy it now’ price, just so we could get a fixed price to compare. The one we chose was this marvellous looking 1969 Camaro Z28. The car has a ‘Buy It Now’ Price of $69,995.00 (22nd July 2015) on the surface, not the cheapest, but also not the most incredibly expensive.

Onto The Price Guide Report
After finding an example vehicle which we could compare prices with, we hopped over to Hagerty.com. We picked from the search – 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with a standard 302cid engine.

I chose ‘vehicle condition 3’, from the left column as the data line to follow, as it sounds about right for this Camaro. In very good condition, but not quite show condition.
The graph indicated that as of May 2015, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 4bbl was worth on average $83,500, but the same car was only worth $49,800 in January 2013. This shows the worth of muscle cars doubling in a year and a half! Does this then mean that our example Camaro from eBay would only have been worth around $30,000 a year and a half ago? Maybe, maybe not.
This resulting price is a very general average, as there are many factors which dictates how much your car is worth, one of those being just how much you are willing to pay for a car.

Comparables
The next tab along on the website, is ‘Comparables’ which lists example vehicles which have sold in the last few years and their prices.
As you can see from the screenshot below, there are widely varying prices for the same vehicle, from $46,200 – $165,000.
That’s a very big price gap, but it does show how seemingly similar cars can vary widely in their pricing depending on their own unique features and history.

Take Aways
Hagerty’s price guide report will give you a very rough estimate of what your muscle car or a muscle car you wish to buy maybe worth.
Like any valuation process, it is always best to have an independent professional evaluator give you an indication of your car’s price, but if you have nothing else, an online price tool will give you a rough general indication.
