5 Of The Most Iconic Muscle Cars
We pick 5 muscle cars that were landmark vehicles from the golden age of muscle cars.
Pontiac GTO
The Pontiac GTO to some started off the muscle car revolution with 1949 rocket 88, but it wasn’t really until 1964 with the first Pontiac GTO, that things started rolling.
Originally an option for the Pontiac Tempest, the GTO went from strength to strength. The second-generation vehicles, 1968 to 1973, saw iconic cars such as the ‘Judge.’ 400ci. and 455ci. engines were the order of the day.
Dodge Charger and Challenger
Why bunch these two iconic models together? Simply because from 1966 – 1974 both models became the poster boys of the muscle car generation. Along with the fact that we put ‘5’ at the top and both would make it six…..weak excuse.
Both the Charger and Challenger were stars of TV and movies, and are still some of the most recognizable from this era of vehicle. Like the rest of the muscle car world, there’s a wide variety of engines and trim, going from a 198ci slant six up to a 440ci engine or a mighty 426ci. Hemi.
Plymouth Road Runner
Built between 1968 and 1980, the Plymouth Road Runner is another one of those iconic muscle cars, instantly recognizable.
A high displacement engine was the way to go here with options being a 383ci, 426ci, 440ci or a 426ci. Hemi.
The Road Runner bred offshoots such as the Plymouth Superbird, but the Roadrunner with its distinctive looks, shouts muscle car all the way.
Chevrolet Chevelle
Although the Chevrolet Chevelle was produced between 1963–1977, it was really the second-generation cars (1968–1972) that made the mark.
Engine options included the 396 cu in (6.5 L) Big-Block V8, 400 cu in (6.6 L) Small-Block V8, 402 cu in (6.6 L) Big-Block V8 and the 454 cu in (7.4 L) Big-Block V8.
One of the most iconic was the 1970 Chevelle SS 454.
Shelby Cobra Super Snake 427
In many ways this is a race car than anything, but the presence of the 427ci. engine and the legendary Shelby name has to be mentioned.
In 1966 Carroll Shelby took a lightweight body, added a 427ci. engine and made one of the fastest roadsters of its time.
Shelby’s association with Ford led onto other iconic vehicles such as the GT 350 and GT 500, but it will always be the ‘Super Snake‘ that is most revered.
The problem is the car is also the most expensive of the bunch, one being sold at Barrett Jackson‘s auction for $5.5 million
