1300 HP 1968 Dodge Charger Custom Build
By Dave Ashton
While checking out this video which features a Roadster Shop built 1300 HP Dodge Charger Custom, the whole argument of should you keep vintage muscle cars all original or customise them debate came up as usual. No matter which side of the fence you sit on, it’s hard to argue that when a vintage ride’s end result is as good as the one featured here, it’s definitely improving on a classic. If you take a rare optioned classic and start making big changes that’s one thing, but with base models where there’s plenty about, it should be down to your creativity.
This 1968 Dodge Charger was an ongoing project in the Roadster Shop and was built completely from the ground up, addressing every single inch of the car. It seems every inch of this Charger has had some form of tweaking with only the middle of the roof skin being unmodified according to the video.
The front of the roof has been lowered 1-1/2 inches, the front wheel openings moved forward 4 inches and the front and rear openings stretched. New door skins were added, aluminium hood and bumpers, a shortened cowl, new front and rear valances and bulging the front fenders and rear quarter panels to exaggerate the Coke bottle effect and that’s just for starters.
The powerplant is a 488 ci. Gen II Viper V10 built by Nelson Racing Engines with two 67mm Precision turbos producing 1,300 hp at 6,200 rpm and 1,100 lb-ft of torque at 5,100 rpm, running through a Legends five-speed transmission. Brembo Gran Turismo 14-inch discs brakes all round, with Roadster Shop suspension. The rest of the rundown of the vehicle you can find from the video, but it’s enough to say if you had a base model Dodge Charger and the money to do so, this wouldn’t be far off the ideal Charger custom build.
