The Fast Muscle Car Family Values

I, like many of you, worry who will take over our fast muscle cars someday when we no longer can. This story has a personal twist I would like to share with all of you. I met this young man several years ago. His Mother enrolled him in our local Big Brother/ Big Sister organization. We were a good match and we began our journey together.

At first he was quite shy and somewhat intimidated by this six foot three inch guy. But we got together every week for several years. We bonded quite well and developed a true friendship. Over time I told him all about my love for cars. We would talk about them and he always had many questions. I wanted so dearly to connect with him and this topic seemed to bring us closer.

So, I asked his Mother if she and or her Husband would bring him to one of our car shows. I wanted him to get up close to all the hundreds of cars and all the people associated with our hobby. Very soon afterward he arrived, my inner circle of friends welcomed him into our group. He asked question after question. He and I walked every row of cars and just talked about each car. In very short order this boy was hooked.

With that in mind he came to more car shows. It was refreshing to see this boy develop into a young man all the while enjoying our hobby. The picture you see here is of him sitting in a friends Mustang. Not just any Mustang but a real deal 65 Mustang GT350 with a value of nearly 400k. Yes this car is the real deal signed by Shelby himself. It’s all documented and the car is a magnet.

Time has marched on and my friend is now car crazy. He spends a lot of time on the internet researching cars. He leans to what most young men lean to today. He is hooked on the Japanese hot rods as well as American hot rods. He even signed up at the local high school to learn the automotive trade this past year. I am not sure where he will land but he is certainly hooked.

My “little brother” is not so little anymore. He is 19 years old and has matured and grown more than I ever could have imagined. We text back and forth and discuss what is going on with today’s hot rods. I have invited back for another year of car shows and he is as excited as I am about getting it under way. His curiosity is refreshing. He wants to know the why, the how, and the what if. He latches on to cars very quickly. His passion runs very deep as he learns from me and my friends. He enjoys the variety of the brands and studies on his own time. I make every attempt to teach him about the fast muscle cars of the 60’s and early 70’s. I want him to understand the roots of our hobby first and foremost. I am quite sure he drives ( no pun intended) his parents crazy with all his car talk.
>>> The basis of my story is not about me. It’s about a young man’s love for our hobby. All of us guys and gals that love and support our hobby want young people involved. I took a swing at this with a young boy and he has developed into a young man now with hot rod blood. I hope all of you will reach out locally to get young people interested. Our hobby binds us together. It gives us lessons everyday. Without new blood coming in our cars are destined for a museum or the scrap heap. If you make an effort I can assure you will see positive results.
