How The Chevrolet Nova Saw It’s Best Years by 1974
By Mark Weisseg
The Chevrolet Nova was built between 1961 and 1979 and was then resurrected between 1985 to 1988. However, it was the late 60s and early 70s that produced the muscle car examples we know best today.
Most of us with a few years under our belt have smelled death. Back when they were making this Nova in the early 1970’s the death watch was on. We were all listening to the death rattle as GM tried to keep the car alive. But between government regulations, the insurance companies and the fickle public at the time, you could see the end was near.
The car had run its course and it was a good one that probably peeked in 69 and 70. By 73-74 it was over. Yes, they built them but now it was a shadow of its former self. Nobody thought of it as a street hot rod anymore. By 1974 they were full of air pollution devices and the car turned into a grocery getter.
We all started wearing black arm bands as we knew it was over. Even today do you rarely see a Nova from this era restored or resto mod’ed. It’s not worth the trouble and money apart from prime examples, but I assure you folks the earlier model Nova’s were to be reckoned with.
Once they were bad asses of the streets and feared for power and that’s the point.
It’s far better to remember the Chevy Nova from its prime years and even some of its earliest models.
How sweet it once was.
