The 5 Best American Cars in 2017
By Dave Ashton
For the rest of the world an American car, especially the muscle car is an exotic beast, untamed, unapologetic and for those who get the idea, a special something that other vehicles cannot provide. The raw, untamed power has been reined in with the modern vehicles to be more user-friendly, but you still that air of unbridled fun, which is also at a price point that usually beats the competition. Here we have a rundown of 5 of the best.
Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport
A mainstay of the American landscape, the Corvette has gone through many generations to reach its latest incarnation as a sports performance vehicle to rival the rest. The 2017 model has an LT1 6.2 L engine that gives out 460 HP with 465lbs. ft. of torque and a 0 to 60 time of 3.6 seconds. On point and quick, with incredible modern looks. Definitely a rival to many of its competitors.
Cadillac CTS-V
The modern Cadillac is there to compete against an S class or 5 series, but has more swagger than the other two. Featuring a supercharged 6.2 L V8 engine with 640 HP and 630 lb-ft of torque through an eight speed automatic transmission gives you loads of rear wheel fun along with tons of luxury.
Dodge Charger Hellcat
The Dodge Charger Hellcat and the Challenger are both the modern muscle cars at the moment with 707 HP from a 6.2 L supercharged V8 engine and plenty of attitude. The Charger is arguably more practical with four doors, but a pure muscle car should really only be a two-door to be worth its salt, so the Challenger fits more with the purists. If you want a thoroughbred modern muscle car, either of these vehicles will fit the bill.
Dodge Viper ACR
The Viper ACR is strictly a racer with a mighty 8.4 L V10 engine pumping out 645 HP and 600 pound-feet of torque. It is soon to finish production, but the Viper’s long tenure has seen it become a snorting performance vehicle which has beaten a Porsche 918 around Laguna Seca and has all the characteristics of a loud and proud road monster in all its forms. Probably as raw and loud as you can get.
Ford Mustang GT350
The GT 350 has a 5.2L Ti-VCT V8 with 526 hp, 429lb. ft. of torque and with the rev range up to 8200 rpm through its quad exhaust, it certainly makes itself known. The GT350 has a long heritage and with Fords ongoing advancements, it looks like a mainstay in the muscle car/pony car world for years to come.
