The Unfortunate History of the AMC Pacer

The AMC Pacer was produced between 1975 and 1979 and although it came at the time where classic muscle cars started to fall out of vogue, it initially had potential. However, the promise of a new, futuristic two-door compact , which was light and could house a 304 cu in (5.0 L) V8, it didn’t quite hit the mark.

American Motors Corporation wanted to do something different from the big three manufacturers and produced a variety of models such as the X package, D/L package, the Limited, the Sundowner, the Levi’s package and a Carl Green Enterprises (CGE) edition with a 401 cu in (6.6 L) V8 engine. These cars could have been a winning formula for a market moving more towards smaller vehicles, but the plan didn’t quite pan out.

The design, which was originally thought off by AMC’s Richard A. Teague in 1971 had many troubles along the way which are documented in this video. In some ways the car design is almost a template for all compacts that came along in the 1980s. Maybe a design ahead of its time?
