Forgotten Fiberglass: Restoring The Rarest Of American Cars

Some people specialize, others ultra-specialize.
Geoff Hacker and Rick D’Louhy founded forgotten fiberglass to track down and restore these home built rarities from around 1951 to 1957.

The post war cars they work on were born out of an era of the ‘Mid-Century Modern,’ where fiber glass and plastics were new-age materials that could be shaped and molded into anything your creativity desired.
fiberglass is essentially sheets of glass fibers which can be built up in layers between resin or glue. The results could be molded into any shape you liked and were as tough and durable as anything out there. Great for cars!
Home car designers could layer fiberglass onto a home-made mold to sculpt anything they liked. ( ironically, carbon fiber is made in the same way today, layers of carbon fiber/resin/carbon fiber, etc. Carbon fiber just replaces fiberglass weave and uses more modern, harder resins to hold it all together.)

Forgotten Fiberglass are seeking out these unique vehicles and restoring them to their former glory.
One such car is a one of a kind Leo Lyons Mercury Custom, shown at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Bought on eBay for $10,000, now worth in excess of $150,000.
Not too shabby for a fiberglass car!
