1970 And 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302

By Dave Ashton

The Mustang Boss 302 was first released into the wild from 1969 to 1970 and again in 2012 and 2013. First produced for SCCA Trans Am racing, it was a cut above a regular Mustang with redesigned small block engine and its distinctive “c-stripe.” and 7,013 sold. The 302 was briefly reintroduced in 2007 with a Parnelli Jones S302, but was limited two. Only 500 vehicles. The second generation came between 2012–2013, with a Laguna Seca edition with only 750 produced.

Comparing the old with the new is an apples and oranges scenario(or whatever fruit you want to pick), but it does give you a chance to show how Ford has brought forward the Boss 302 and tried to integrate some of the distinctive old features into a new design. Past that, if you’re interested in one of these vehicles it’s really down to your budget and if you want a new vintage pony/muscle car.

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 G-code

Engine: 302ci.
Transmission: four speed Manual
Exterior Color: Wimbledon White
Mileage: 27,931
Price:US $78,000.00

This 302 example is numbers matching & has had a complete restoration with OEM parts where needed. The motor has been tweaked a bit being bored .030 with 11:1 pistons and a a Isky cam. As the ad. says, the car is ‘pristine’ and comes with full documentation. The original G code engine had 290 hp with a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.9 seconds, quarter-mile in 14.6 seconds. The 302 did very well in the 1970 Trans Am season, winning the championship in 1970.

This one has the optional rear black window shade and true to original decals. The rear end gears are now 3.89 : 1, instead of the original 3.91 : 1 gears.

There are more expensive and slightly cheaper 302’s available at the moment, but this example strikes a happy medium for price and originality.

2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca

VIN: 1ZVBP8CU9D5249484
Engine: 5.0L 4V HI-PO TI-VCT V8
Transmission: 6 speed MT-82 manual
Exterior Color: Black
Mileage: 11,703
Price:US $39,991.00

There’s nothing like an original, but a modern interpretation will at least have the luxuries we are accustomed to today and definitely won’t break down as much. The Laguna Seca is a limited edition version of the Boss 302 and houses Ford’s 5.0-liter V8 producing 444hp and 380 lb·ft of torque.

For that bit extra money you get Ricardo seats in the front but lose the rear seats, Torsen limited-slip rear differential, upgraded suspension and larger rear stabilizer. Being a limited edition you could have a future rarity on your hands, along with the 302 moniker to keep its value.

If you’re a Ford fan both vehicles will simply be worth the money, but even if you’re after a pony/muscle car , which will give you plenty of fun and increasing value, the old or the new could be a good investment.
