Electric power seems to be on the horizon for our beloved pony and muscle cars according to the latest reports. Chevrolet have been testing out how well this will go down with consumers with surveys on a popular Chevy forum.

On the Camaro6 forum users were asked which engine options they would choose in a Chevrolet Camaro, specifically a turbo four-cylinder engine and a 6.2-liter hybrid V8 engine. There was also mention of a 2019 Chevy Silverado’s 2.7L turbo.

Specifically the two engine types would be a 2 L turbocharged hybrid with 335 hp, 30 mpg and 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, US$4,000 on top of a base Camaro. The second would is a 6.2-liter hybrid V8 engine with 545HP, 24 mpg, 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and $8000 more. Both hybrids provide more power and economy than current equivalents if you consider the 6.2L LT1 V8 makes 450 hp and the Camaro SS 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder makes 275 hp. That’s 95 hp more for the V8 and 80Hp more for the four-cylinder.

At this point it seems that there are no specific planned models, its just gauging opinion at this time, but the hybrid and electric pony car is definitely on the horizon. Last October, GM patented a twin charged, high compression hybrid setup, which could easily be the start point for a hybrid Camaro. If there are plans to move the hybrid powertrain to the Corvette C8 are unlikely as the Corvette would be a mid-engined vehicle, but rule out a hybrid Corvette in the future.

The news comes after Ford teased possible hybrids and fully electric vehicles for the Mustang in a recent promotional video, possibly making an appearance in 2020. It’s a fine balancing act at the moment as muscle car manufacturers don’t want to be left behind in the hybrid and fully electric race, but they also want to keep V8 enthusiasts happy, who have bought into these vehicles for the last 40+ years.
