The Mercury Cougar may have sat in the shadow of the Mustang and Thunderbird, but the car has a long history from 1967-1997, then 1999-2002. The first-generation models from 1967 to 1970 gave the most in the form of a classic muscle car, with models like the XR-7, GT package, XR7-G and Eliminator package. Although engine options, went up to the 427 cu in (7.0 L) FE V8, it was the 351ci. Cleveland V8 that was the most popular.
The Eliminator package brought a bunch of options above the basic models, – ‘blacked-out grille, special side stripes, front and rear spoilers, an optional Ram Air induction system, a full gauge package including tachometer, upgraded “Decor” interior trim, special high-back bucket seats, rally wheels, raised white letter tires, and a performance-tuned suspension and handling package.’

Mercury Cougars may not be the first choice for a classic muscle car, but the blacked out grille and overall design makes the Cougar as classic as any other muscle car. You’re probably paying top dollar here for a showroom restored vehicle, but it is as good as anything else out there.
